This presentation, by Dr. Miguel Rodrigues Lourenço and Dr. Susana Bastos Mateus from The Centre for the Study of Religious History - Catholic University of Portugal, will focus on the preliminary findings on the Franciscan Documents in the Archives of Goa.

Studies on Catholic missions in Asia increased greatly between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. That particular moment in the historiography of missions was largely due to the investment of the members of the religious orders in furthering the knowledge of their own past. Unlike what happened with the Society of Jesus, though, in the case of the two provinces of Franciscan filiation − provinces of S. Tomé and Madre de Deus − there was no immediate continuity between the studies of authors such as Félix Lopes or Achiles Meersman and lay historians. Only in the last decades did the interest on Franciscan activities and literary production in Asia met a revival. In this conference we will present the project “Portuguese Franciscans in Asia: Spaces, Agents and Documents (1500-1834)”, and discuss the preliminary findings of the research conducted at the Historical Archives of Goa.

Dr. Miguel Rodrigues Lourenço is a researcher at the Centre for Humanities - FCSH-Nova University of Lisbon and Centre for the Study of Religious History - Catholic University of Portugal.

Dr. Susana Bastos Mateus is a researcher for CIDEHUS – Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of History, Cultures and Societies – University of Évora and of the Centre for the Study of Religious History - Catholic University of Portugal.
